Best New Series on Amazon Prime Video
When it comes to series, Prime Video has something for everyone this August. That includes new seasons of fan favourites and at least one series premiere. Here are the best new series on Prime Video for this month.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power – Season 2
Release Date: 29 August 2024
One of Amazon’s most expensive productions of all time scored plenty of viewers with its first season but didn’t exactly inspire universal praise. Will Season 2 work out the kinks? The only way to find out is to re-immerse yourself in the fantasy world you already know so well. This time around, the Dark Lord Sauron returns from exile with a vengeance, harnessing the Rings of Power so that he may rule over Middle-earth once and for all.
Batman: Caped Crusader
Release Date: 1 August 2024
Ask numerous fans and they’ll tell you that animated Batman is often the best Batman. With that in mind, Prime Video will proudly debut this new animated series about the dark knight. It comes to us from executive producers J.J. Abrams and Matt Reeves—who previously collaborated on the Cloverfield franchise—and DC Comics stalwart Bruce Timm (co-creator of the original Batman: The Animated Series, among other things). The series will reimagine the mythology behind Gotham’s foremost caped crusader, whose brutal fight for justice comes with unforeseen ramifications. We’ll be watching.
Beacon 23 – Season 2
Release Date: 2 August 2024
The first season of this sci-fi series trapped a government agent and former military man inside an intergalactic Beacon (think of a Beacon as a space lighthouse). Season 2 continues the adventure as our protagonists grapple with rogue AI and a mysterious rock formation known as the Artifact, all while still being trapped aboard Beacon 23.
The Mallorca Files – Season 3
Release Date: 8 August 2024
In the spirit of shows like Moonlighting and Bones comes this charming police procedural. It takes place on the sun-soaked island of Mallorca, where an ambitious British detective and her laid-back German partner must overcome their differences to enforce local law and order. The stakes are high and the romantic tension is thick as we wait for these two to just hook up already. In the meantime, they embark on some fairly wild adventures.
No Gain No Love
Release Date: 26 August 2024
In this South Korean romantic comedy series, a down-on-her-luck woman stages a fake wedding for financial reasons. Since no proper fake wedding is complete without a groom, she enlists a local convenience store employee for the task. The story also introduces a number of eccentric supporting characters who likewise navigate the modern world in unique ways.
Best New Movies on Prime Video
If you didn’t catch movies like The Beekeeper in theatres, you’ll have the chance to stream them on Prime Video this August. A number of other titles will also be available to rent or buy. Here are the highlights.
Jackpot!
Release Date: 15 August 2024
John Cena and Awkwafina co-star in this upcoming action comedy, which sounds like a cross between The Purge and the recent Hulu movie Self Reliance. Originally titled Grand Death Lotto (which we kind of prefer, to be honest), it takes place in near-future California. Upon her arrival in Los Angeles, transplant Katie Kim (Awkwafina) unwittingly wins the state’s Grand Lottery multi-billion-dollar jackpot. There’s just one catch: if someone kills her within 24 hours, the jackpot is theirs to claim. Cena plays the self-assigned lottery protection agent who agrees to help Katie Kim in exchange for a cut of her winnings.
The Beekeeper
Release Date: 23 August 2024
Jason Statham goes full John Wick in this ludicrous action movie from director David Ayer. It opens with Statham tending bees for an elderly woman (Phylicia Rashad), who kills herself after falling victim to a phishing scam. As it turns out, our resident beekeeper is also a Beekeeper, meaning he belongs to a very mysterious and powerful organisation with endless resources. So goes his violent trail of vengeance, which leads all the way to the White House and gets outrageously stupid the further it goes.
A Sacrifice
Release Date: 2 August 2024
Worlds collide in this brooding crime thriller, based on a 2015 novel by Nicholas Hogg. It takes place in Berlin and follows an American social psychologist (Eric Bana) as he investigates a dangerous cult. Meanwhile, his rebellious teenage daughter (Sadie Sink) forges a unique bond with a mysterious local. It seems fairly obvious where the story is going but watch for yourself to find out.
Madame Web
Release Date: 8 August 2024
Not since Cats has there been a cinematic disaster on the scale of Madame Web, which tells the origin story of its titular character (Dakota Johnson). The movie rolled out to bad publicity and vitriolic reviews before summarily disappearing from theatres. Now it’s yours to stream on Prime Video and only you can decide if it’s as bad as its reputation would suggest.
One Fast Move
Release Date: 8 August 2024
On the brink of destitution, Wes Neal pursues his dream of becoming a pro motorcycle racer in this upcoming drama. With help from his romantic interest and a local motorcycle shop owner, Wes embarks on a search for his estranged father. His journey forces him to confront his traumatic past and the various psychological and physical hurdles getting in his way. Meanwhile, you had us at motorcycle racing!
The Shakedown
Release Date: 8 August 2024
This South African crime comedy takes place in Cape Town and puts well-respected insurance broker Justin Diamond through the wringer. When his mistress threatens to expose their affair, Diamond turns to his criminal brother in the hopes of salvaging his reputation. Things get messy, to say the least.
The Bikeriders
Release Date: Available to rent or buy soon
The latest effort from director Jeff Nichols is a fictional retelling of the real-life Outlaws Motorcycle Club. It spends a decade in the life of the Chicago-based club, which starts as a community for misfits but gradually becomes a full-blown crime organisation. Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Jodie Comer, Michael Shannon, and Norman Reedus star.
A Quiet Place: Day One
Release Date: Available to rent or buy soon
The word on this blockbuster prequel is that it shatters expectations, so we’ll definitely be streaming it this August. It takes place in New York City during the onset of an alien invasion, as people discover that even the slightest sound can get them killed. Good luck getting New Yorkers to shut up is all we can say to that!
Despicable Me 4
Release Date: Available to rent or buy soon
Anti-Villain League (AVL) agent Gru (voiced by Steve Carrell) squares off against a new foe and welcomes an infant son in the latest instalment of this popular franchise. We were going to skip it until we noticed that The White Lotus creator Mike White co-wrote the script, and now we’re slightly intrigued. Eh, we’ll still skip it.

WNBA
