iPhone 15 Changes and New Features

Key things to note:

  • Colour-infused back glass with textured matte finish
  • Contoured edge on the aerospace-grade aluminium enclosure
  • 48MP Main camera with 24MP default, improved Night Mode and Smart HDR
  • 2x Telephoto camera
  • Peak outdoor brightness reaches up to 2000 nits (twice the previous generation)
  • Peak HDR brightness now reaches up to 1600 nits
  • A16 Bionic chip carries over from the iPhone 14
  • Improved audio quality on phone calls with ‘Voice Isolation’
  • USB-C Class 3 connection

Compared to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max below, only a handful of changes have been made to the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, most of which are software-based. The A16 Bionic chip carries over from the previous model, while the biggest changes are the 48MP Main camera that was first introduced on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, and colour-infused back glass with a textured matte finish.

Display sizes remain the same as before at 6.1 inches for the iPhone 15 and 6.7 inches for the iPhone 15 Plus, but they now reach a peak brightness of 2000 nits outdoors (a 2x increase over the previous generation). At the same time, HDR brightness now reaches up to 1600 nits and all iPhone 15 models get Apple’s ‘Dynamic Island’ feature.

In terms of cameras, the 48MP main camera takes 24MP photos as a default for storage purposes and features a 2x Telephoto option for the first time on the base iPhone. Software-wise, the acclaimed ‘Portrait Mode’ now automatically switches when there’s a person, dog, or cat in the frame, or when a user taps to focus. You can then adjust the focus point after the photo has been taken.

Precision Finding is a new feature that utilises the second-generation Ultra Wideband chip to help you find friends or family in large crowds in a similar way to the ‘Find My’ app. If you’ve ever used Air Tags, you’ll know how helpful this feature is.

Finally, Apple has thrown the Lightning connector in the bin and swapped it to the universally accepted USB-C Class 3 port. Now you can use the same cable to charge the iPhone, Mac, iPad, and the updated AirPods Pro (2nd generation).

iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max Changes and New Features

Key things to note:

  • Titanium construction for the lightest Pro model ever
  • Customisable action button used for shortcuts
  • 48MP Main camera with 24MP default, now with Log encoding
  • 5x Telephoto camera (Pro Max-only)
  • A17 Pro chip for increased performance
  • Wi-Fi 6E for better wireless performance, including up to 2x faster speeds
  • Improved audio quality on phone calls with ‘Voice Isolation’
  • USB-C Class 3 connection

Changes to the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are more significant than those made to the standard iPhone 15, including lightweight titanium construction, a new chip, a new camera lens, a new action button and a host of smaller changes including Wi-Fi 6E and the ability to capture ‘Spatial Video’ (three-dimensional video) for use with Apple Vision Pro in the future.

Like the standard iPhone 15, display sizes remain the same as before at 6.1 inches for the iPhone 15 Pro and 6.7 inches for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The Super Retina XDR display with Always-On and ProMotion 120hz adaptive refresh rate carries over from the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max, but that’s okay because they’re industry-leading and sit at the forefront of display technology.

You’ll notice the new ‘Action Button’ in the photo above, it replaces the single-action toggle switch on previous iPhone models. Now you can control the camera or flashlight, activate Voice Memos, Focus modes, Translate, and accessibility features like Magnifier, or use Shortcuts for more options.

The new A17 Pro chip underpins the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max, offering a CPU that’s 10 per cent faster, a GPU that’s 20 per cent faster, and a Neural Engine that’s twice as fast to help with autocorrect and Personal Voice in iOS 17. It also features a dedicated AV1 decoder for more efficient, high-quality video experiences across streaming services.

In terms of the camera, the 48MP unit on the iPhone 15 Pro models is different to that used on the standard device, built exclusively for the Pro line-up. The three-camera array allows you to switch between three focal lengths – 24mm, 28mm, and 35mm – and select one as a default. Maybe the biggest change to the camera is the 5x Telephoto camera that sits in between Samsung’s 3x and 10x cameras, providing the longest optical zoom ever on iPhone: 5x at 120mm.
