Is it just us, or is no one asking for more Rebel Moon? Maybe it is just us, as Netflix will release the Director’s Cut of Rebel Moon Parts One and Two this August, delivering Zack Snyder’s full vision of a Star Wars rip-off in all of its contrived glory. And in the category of “this sounds like softcore porn but it’s actually for kids,” the streamer will debut Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie, a new SpongeBob joint. Speaking of animation, there’s an animated Terminator series that looks pretty awesome. You’ll find all that and more on the list below, which includes the full August 2024 schedule release for Netflix Australia plus highlights. Here we go.

Best New Series on Netflix
The whole reason we come to the streamer in the first place, new Netflix series launches are the stuff of gold. This month, we’ve got fresh episodes of fan favourites along with a brand new series premiere. Here are the best new series coming to Netflix in August 2024.
The Umbrella Academy: Season 4
Release Date: 8 August 2024
This sci-fi adventure series is still going strong as it approaches its fourth season. Following a major showdown and timeline reset, the Hargreeve siblings are separated from one another and stripped of their powers. As each character adjusts to their new normal, various entities conspire against them. Tune in for blockbuster action, intense drama, and a healthy dose of comic relief.
Love is Blind: UK
Release Date: 7 August 2024
Having already been adapted for various international markets, this mega-popular dating series is now shoring up on UK soil. For those who don’t know the drill, it goes like this: 15 men and 15 women are allowed to verbally communicate but not allowed to physically see one another until they’re engaged. Before you get too cynical, you should know that every now and then a genuine romance is forged. Take it from here, Brits!
Terminator Zero
Release Date: 29 August 2024
The Terminator franchise hasn’t exactly been consistent since the release of the first two films, but we’re geared up for this animated series adaptation anyway. It takes us back to 1997 and tells the story of a second superintelligence system named Kokoro, essentially Japan’s answer to Skynet. The plot follows a cyborg is sent back in time to kill the system’s creator, while a soldier is sent back in time to protect him. This might suggest that Kokoro is a good thing, but we’ll have to wait and see!
Emily in Paris: Season 4 Part 1
Release Date: 15 August 2024
A Chicago girl brings her American perspective to a Parisian marketing firm in this popular dramedy series. Season 4 finds our protagonist making bold choices in the city of her dreams as she grapples with modern romance. The first five episodes will land in August, followed by five more in September.
Best New Movies on Netflix
This month, Netflix will release a handful of Original films along with licensed highlights to keep you entertained. Mark Wahlberg returns in an action-packed romance, while Zack Snyder takes another bite of the cherry with the release of his director’s cuts for Rebel Moon. Here’s a closer look at the best new films on Netflix this month.
The Deliverance
Release Date: 30 August 2024
From Oscar-nominated director Lee Daniels comes this intense thriller about demons of the metaphorical—and possibly literal—variety. Andra Day plays a mother named Ebony, who must contend with evil forces upon moving into a new house. When Child Protective Services gets involved, Ebony must fight to keep her family together. The story is inspired by actual events.
Rebel Moon — Part One & Two: Director’s Cut
Release Date: 2 August 2024
There was once a time when we would have picked up pretty much anything that Zack Snyder was throwing down, but that time now feels like a galaxy far, far away. Hence, we’ll leave it to the superfans to let us know whether the Director’s Cut of Rebel Moon Parts One & Two is worth the watch. Take the general plotline of Star Wars and you pretty much know what to expect here, but with the director’s bombastic touch. Sigh.
The Union
Release Date: 16 August 2024
Mark Wahlberg stars opposite Halle Berry in this upcoming action comedy. When a regular construction worker (Wahlberg) reunites with his former flame (Berry), she ends up recruiting him for a high-stakes international spy mission. It’s a premise as old as Hitchcock so here’s hoping the two stars can breathe new life into a fairly tired subgenre.
Saving Bikini Bottom: The Sandy Cheeks Movie
Release Date: 2 August 2024
SpongeBob Squarepants and Sandy Cheeks must save Bikini Bottom in this full-length feature outing, a spin-off of the SpongeBob franchise. The movie blends live action and animation and sends SpongeBob and Sandy on a road trip to Texas. Can they rescue their favourite underwater town from the clutches of an evil corporation? Watch to find out.
New Netflix Documentaries
After dropping a number of docuseries and documentaries over the past few months, Netflix Australia is back at it again. Here are the best new Netflix documentary releases to land in August 2024.
Secret World of Sound with David Attenborough
Release Date: 7 August 2024
Pretty much every nature documentary involving David Attenborough is a feast for the eyes, but this one shines a new light on the secret world of sound. Using advanced audio technology, it captures never-before-heard animal noises among creatures big and small. From reptiles chirping in eggs to nocturnal lion fights and more, your ears will perk up and stay up.
Worst Ex Ever
Release Date: 14 August 2024
Netflix struck gold with Worst Roommate Ever, so this true-crime docuseries seemed more or less inevitable. It chronicles some of the world’s worst exes and the disasters they bring, including double crosses and murders. Geesh—talk about a series that will never run out of content!
New Comedy on Netflix
The constantly rotating Netflix comedy lineup brings at least a few good laughs every month and this August is no exception. Here’s a closer look at two new comedy specials on Netflix.
Joe Rogan: Burn the Boats
Release Date: 3 August 2024
Joe Rogan’s tireless work ethic has made him a formidable stand-up comedian over the course of decades. His last Netflix special yielded at least a few terrific bits, and this new one is sure to do the same. Call it a hunch, but we suspect that he’ll tackle PC culture, modern masculinity, and politics, among other things. Or maybe he’ll riff on vegan cats for a full hour. Either way, we plan to watch.
Matt Rife: Lucid – A Crowd Work Special
Release Date: 13 August 2024
Crowdwork is so popular these days that Matt Rife is dedicating an entire special to it (a first for Netflix). The candid comedian hit the stage in Charlotte and interacted with the audience to illuminating—and presumably hilarious—results. Behold the new era of riffing.
Things to Consider for Netflix
When it comes to streaming services, Netflix is arguably the biggest and best-known. The entertainment juggernaut has produced some of the most binged series in recent memory, not to mention given new life to ageing and formerly cancelled favourites. When you are considering a subscription or you just want to know what to watch on Netflix, here are some considerations to keep front of mind.
Subscription
In order to watch new Netflix series and movies, you will need to subscribe to the platform. That being said, you can see what is out there before you sign up as it is possible to browse Netflix without subscribing. You can browse Netflix’s full catalogue of titles without subscribing by visiting netflix.com/watch-free. With this site, you can watch the first episode of many popular series without needing to sign up.
Netflix Cost
If you have been asking ‘Is Netflix cheaper than Prime Video?”, the answer isn’t as straightforward as you’d think. A standard Netflix subscription with ads is cheaper than Prime Video, while a standard subscription without ads is slightly more expensive than Prime Video. Netflix’s standard with ads is priced at AUD$6.99 per month while Prime Video will set you back AUD$9.99 per month.
Titles and Originals
Netflix is renowned for its massive catalogue of titles, highlighted primarily by its extensive range of Netflix originals. These in-house productions receive the biggest marketing push on the platform, so it’s likely that you have tuned in, seen one or two or unwittingly binged whole seasons. For reference, the most-viewed series in Netflix history is reportedly season one of Squid Game, which generated an estimated 265,200,000 views, followed by season one of Wednesday with 252,100,000 views and season four of Stranger Things with 140,700,000 views.
